William (Bill) Smith established Westar Illumination in 2003 after working 11 years for Sallie Mae and eight years as a principal at Willow Garden Design. He currently serves as the President and principle designer of WEStar Illumination. It was while studying landscape design at the U.S. Department of Agriculture under Joel Lerner (Author of the Green Scene column in the Washington Post), that he saw a landscape lighting demonstration that inspired him to establish his own landscape lighting company. Landscape lighting has provided him the opportunity to use his hands and to express his creativity in an exciting and growing field.
Mr. Smith has studied at The Landscape Lighting Institute, lead by Janet Lennox Moyer, the author of "The Landscape Lighting Book," the definitive text for the landscape lighting industry. He is the first landscape lighting designer in the Northern Virginia and Washington, DC Metropolitan area to be certified by the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP) as a Certified Low Voltage Lighting Technician (CLVLT) and as a Certified Outdoor Lighting Designer (COLD). The COLD certification is an advanced designation that requires completion of an extensive four-year program consisting of course trainging in landscape lighting design, advanced design preparation and peer review. The program certification is the only one of its kind in the United States.
He received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Commerce from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA; and a Masters Degree in Business Administration, and Masters in Information Management from Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. He has served as a Certified Public Accountant.
